Getting a chance in the Indian team is not an easy task given the abundance of talent in the country. But IPL has provided a generous platform wherein if the youngsters perform well and grab headlines, they will be fast-tracked into the Indian team. However, often the performers of IPL are unable to capitalize on this opportunity and fail to live up to expectations. Here, we look at some of the IPL performers who failed to perform for the Indian team.

Here are four IPL performers who failed at the international level:

1. Varun Chakravarthy

T20 World Cup there at the back of my mind but goal is to get KKR to IPL playoffs: Varun Chakravarthy - Sports News

Just before the World Cup in 2021, Varun came into the Indian team with massive hype about being a “mystery bowler”. And rightly so, as he had been KKR’s best bowler in IPL 2020 and 2021. But when he reached the international stage, he could not achieve the same outcome. He has played 6 T20Is for India and has managed to take just one wicket. This shows how ineffective he has been in international cricket.

2. Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been CSK’s best batter since IPL 2020. He even held the orange cap in IPL 2021 and helped CSK in lifting their fourth title. Gaikwad also has an excellent record in domestic cricket as he was the top performer in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But Gaikwad has been below par for India and has not made full use of his chances. In 9 T20Is, Ruturaj averages 16 at a moderate strike rate of 123.85. He has just one fifty to his name and is unlikely to feature in the future Indian squads.

3. Nitish Rana

Nitish Rana has been a consistent performer for KKR for many years. He is a complete player as he can contribute useful overs in the middle with his off-spin. Rana is flexible enough to bat on the top order or in the middle order. He was given a chance in India’s tour to Sri Lanka for one ODI and two T20Is. But Rana failed to make an impact on the limited chances he got. Ultimately, he could not book his place in the future squads and he is not in the reckoning for the Indian team now.

4. Rahul Chahar

Since IPL 2019, Rahul Chahar was Mumbai Indians’ frontline spinner. The young spinner impressed everyone with his sharp leg spin and ultimately he was included in the T20 World Cup at the expense of India’s most successful T20 bowler, Yuzvendra Chahal. But in six T20I games, Chahar could manage only 7 wickets at an average of 24. After India’s poor show at the World Cup last year, Chahar was dropped from the Indian team and hasn’t been considered since.
