Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have taken a surprising step in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League where they decided to change their captain. And, Dinesh Karthik, who was the captain since the beginning of the season has handed over the responsibility to England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan. However, former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir on Friday lashed out the franchise’s decision as well.
Karthik has led the team in 7 games this season and they won in 4 games and lost 3 before Morgan was handed over the reins. Notably, it is being claimed that Karthik did so as he wanted to focus on his batting but that certainly didn’t go well with Gambhir.
“Cricket is not about relationships, it’s about performances and honestly, I don’t think Morgan can change a lot of things. He could’ve changed a lot of things had he captained from the start of the tournament. No one changes during the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to have a good relationship between the coach and the captain,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports.
Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan’s journey as a captain of KKR started with a crushing defeat against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday where they failed to defend 148 in 20 overs. However, despite the loss, they are placed at the 4th position in the points table.
On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir felt that Dinesh Karthik was doing a great job as a leader and this step wasn’t needed as well. Karthik was appointed captain 2 and a half years ago and did well in both the roles – as a batsman and as a captain. And, this sudden decision has surprised many, including Gambhir.
“If KKR wanted to make this change, they should have done it at the start of the competition. If you are talking so much about a World Cup-winning captain being there in your team puts pressure on someone like Dinesh Karthik then why not just give it to Morgan straightaway, why put so much pressure on Karthik?,” he added.
“My point is, it sounds very good when someone says that I want to concentrate on my batting but the truth is, you start getting fillers from the management whether they are happy or not, so it’s very unfortunate,” Gautam Gambhir concluded.
