Virat Kohli, India’s prolific batsman, had a forgettable run in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Scoring just five runs in the first three matches, Kohli’s form raised eyebrows. However, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes there’s more to the story than meets the eye.
“He has never opened for India in a T20 World Cup. It’s clear that it’s a slightly new position and considering the conditions that were there, your first mistake was your last mistake. The batters don’t get a second chance here and it has been a challenge for the top-order batters,” Bangar said.
Kohli found himself in an unfamiliar position – opening the innings for India in a T20 World Cup. Bangar acknowledges that this change might have affected his performance. As an opener, there’s no room for error; the first mistake becomes the last one. Conditions were also challenging, making it a tough initiation for Kohli.
Despite Kohli’s indifferent performances, the Men in Blue secured a spot in the Super Eights. Bangar remains optimistic, suggesting that this lean phase could be “a lull before the storm.”
Can Virat Kohli Find His Form Back?
Kohli has never opened in a T20 World Cup before. Adjusting to this new role takes time, especially under high-pressure situations. In closely contested matches, opening batters faced difficulties. The pressure to perform from the outset is immense. India’s management has already expressed their preference for Rishabh Pant at the team’s crucial No. 3 position. Shuffling Kohli now might disrupt the team’s plans.
Bangar predicts changes for the Super 8 games in the West Indies. Kuldeep Yadav’s return is essential, possibly at the expense of a fast bowler. With Hardik Pandya bowling well, either Arshdeep Singh or Mohammed Siraj might miss out. India could even field three spinners.
