Former Indian cricket team captain, Gautam Gambhir, has been endorsed by another cricketing legend, Sourav Ganguly, as a potential coach for the national team. Ganguly’s endorsement comes in the wake of Gambhir’s successful stint as a mentor with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship in IPL

Despite lacking experience in coaching at the international or domestic level, Gambhir has led the coaching staff at two IPL franchises. He served as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, guiding them to playoff berths in both seasons, before joining KKR for the 2024 season. His return to KKR as a mentor changed the fortunes of the team and ended their 10-year title drought of winning the elusive IPL title.

Ganguly has highlighted Gambhir’s passion and honesty, stating that he is a very good candidate for Team India’s Head coach position. He also noted that there is a difference between coaching or mentoring a franchise and coaching an international team, especially a high-profile team like India.

“I am in favour of an Indian coach. If he has applied, Gambhir will be a good coach,” Ganguly said.

However, he believes that Gambhir, with his strong character and good cricket brain, would know how to deal with stars like Virat and Rohit, and would surely adapt himself to the culture of the change room.
