Football : Mesut Özil, Arsenal’s new No.10

Following the departure of Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil was given the number 10 jersey as per his request. The former Real Madrid star had worn the No.11 number jersey previously. He waited patiently since 2013 to take over that number from Jack Wilshere who had taken over the No.10 shirt from his former team mate Robin Van persie in the 2012-13 season. After announcing his decision to not renew his contract with his boyhood club earlier this summer, the English midfielder is most likely to make a move to the Turkish league with interests coming from Crystal palace and West Ham as well.

Mesut Ozil, on the other hand was extremely delighted to claim the No.10 shirt from him. He took to social media to express his delight. Arsenal signed the German play-maker from Real Madrid in 2013 for €47m. He had been wearing the No.11 shirt since then. Upon claiming his new shirt, he said that It was more than just a number and it means a lot to him wearing it next season.

Along the years, the No.10 shirt have been worn by some Arsenal greats. To name a couple, Legendary Dutch forwards Dennis Bergkamp and Robin Van persie have both donned the jersey. Mesut Ozil is expected to join the arsenal camp earlier than scheduled before following Germany’s shock elimination from the group stages of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. Ozil now wears No. 10 shirt for both club and country.
