Premier League giants Arsenal have signed Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira from Seria A giants Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee but is believed to be around €30m . This is Unai Emery’s fourth signing of the summer having already signed right back Stephan Lichtsteiner, goalkeeper Bernd Leno and defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The 22-yr old midfielder featured in all of Uruguay’s matches in the ongoing FIFA World Cup where Uruguay reached the quarterfinals. Lucas Torreira’s tactical awareness will be a big boost to the Arsenal midfield.
Torreira, who will be wearing the number 11 shirt for Gunners, has been at the club for a medical and will now have a post-World Cup break and will join the squad in early August. Having moved to Italy in 2013 after starting his youth career at hometown club 18 de Julio, Lucas is an extremely tactically aware player leading his former coach to say that Torreira is the best tactically since Sergio Busquets. A brief spell at Montevideo Wanderers and he then moved to Pescara youth team. Following a string of impressive performances, he earned the first team call up in 2014-15 season. On July 2015, Torreira transferred to Sampdoria for €1.5 million, but he remained with Pescara on loan for the 2015–16 season to gain first-team experience. A year later, after the completion of his loan period at Pescara, he was back to Sampdoria and by the 2016-17 season he became a regular starter for Sampdoria even scoring two goals in their famous 3-2 victory over Juventus.
Upon completion of the deal Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said: “In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”
