The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the only competition in the world where people saw legends like AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni, and others play even after their retirement. However, there are some veterans of the game who may never be seen in the world’s toughest league again due to age, fitness, availability, or form concerns. Let’s have a look at some of these legends who are unlikely to feature in the IPL.

Here are five legends who may never play in the IPL again:

5. Steve Smith

Without a shadow of a doubt, Steve Smith is a modern-day great who has been phenomenal in the Test format. Smith averages 60 in the longest format and has proved his mettle in the One-day format too. However, Smith has never been able to prove himself in the shortest format.

Now teams are off the view that Smith is not suitable for the T20 format and hence the legend went unsold in this year’s mega auction. He represented Delhi Capitals in the previous season and wasn’t a regular member of the team. Smith’s poor strike rate has been a big concern for teams. Hence, it seems that teams have moved on from picking Smith on their side.

4. Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra is one of the legends in the IPL who has picked 166 wickets in his career. Mishra is the second-highest wicket-taker in the competition and has 3 hat tricks to his name. However, now age is not on the side of the veteran leggie and teams have overlooked his experience.

Hence, Mishra went unsold in this year’s auction and it is unlikely that any team will pick him in the future. Mishra played his last IPL game for Delhi Capitals against RCB in 2021. Since then, the veteran spinner lost his place in the side-to-finger spinners Axar Patel and Ashwin, before getting released by DC.

3. Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina going unsold in the IPL was a shocker for CSK fans. Raina has been an integral part of the yellow army since its inception and is known as Chinnathala by CSK’s fans. He is also referred to as “Mr IPL” due to his consistency in the competition. At one stage, he was the highest run-scorer in the league. Raina scored 400 plus runs in almost all seasons of the IPL.

However, Raina lost his old touch once he reached 33. Raina was no longer effective with the bat in IPL 2021 and was dropped from the squad after some games. His last IPL game came against Rajasthan Royals in a group stage encounter in 2021. Now Raina has assumed a commentary role in the world’s biggest league.

2. Mitchell Starc

It is a shame that one of the best bowlers of the modern era, Mitchell Starc, hasn’t played the World’s biggest league in over 7 years. Starc’s last IPL encounter was against Chennai Super Kings in 2015 where he represented RCB. This is mostly because Starc keeps his international commitment over his financial needs.

Starc, who is prone to injuries, avoids IPL so that he can be fresh while playing for Australia. Hence, it is unlikely that Starc will ever make himself available for the IPL. Maybe when Starc reaches the fag end of his international career, he may give IPL a go. But at the moment, it seems like Starc has no interest in playing in the IPL.

1. Eoin Morgan

Arguably England’s one of the best white-ball skippers, who revolutionized English cricket and won them their first ICC World Cup, may never be seen in the IPL again. Eoin Morgan has suffered the worst slump one could ever imagine. Now rumours are going around that Morgan may step down from captaincy and announce his retirement owing to his poor form.

In the previous season, Eoin Morgan led KKR to the finals of the competition. However, he did not contribute anything to the side’s successful campaign and was let go by the franchise. Predictably, Morgan went unsold in the mega auction and it is unlikely that the English legend will be seen in the competition again.
