India are expected to field two debutants in the first ODI against England in Pune. Prasidh Krishna, Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya are the only members of the current Indian contingent who are yet to make an appearance in the 50-over format.
According to a report from Cricbuzz, India are keen on fielding the debutants over the course of the series. Two of them could feature soon as India look to extensively test their bench strength in the absence of first-team regulars such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Ravindra Jadeja.
“We want to know where these players stand in international cricket and the exact depth of our riches,” a source in know of things said.
While the preparations for the T20 World Cup are in full flow in terms of rotation and strategy, the team are looking ahead as well. India aims to build a formidable unit across all departments for next year’s T20 World Cup and the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup as well.
Amid the talks of debutants, the major question that the batting unit poses is the KL Rahul conundrum. While the wicket-keeper batsman has been donning the gloves and cementing his place at No.5, his recent patch makes things tricky.
Moreover, ODI is a format where Rishabh Pant has not been able to get a hold of so far. He has gone on to make his stance in test and T20 cricket, he still has to prove himself in the 50-over format, and his recent form makes this the optimum time to do so.
“It will be interesting because there are a few younger players who are getting an opportunity in the one-day set-up for the first time, so I am really keen to see how they go about executing their skills against a very, very strong England side,” Kohli had said ahead of the first ODI
The three-match ODI series will kick start today from 1:30 PM at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
