Here is an excerpt from FIFA’s “Stats of the Day”:
- 1970 – Brazil become the last-ever winners of the Jules Rimet Cup by defeating Italy 4-1 in the FIFA World Cup final in Mexico City to claim their third world title. The cup would subsequently be replaced by the current FIFA World Cup Trophy in 1974.
- 1990 – England defeat Egypt 1-0 in Cagliari, with Three Lions goalkeeper Peter Shilton collecting his tenth clean sheet in 17 FIFA World Cup matches.
- 1994 & 1998 – Argentinian striker Gabriel Batistuta is one of four players to have twice scored three or more goals in a World Cup match. He is, however, the only player to bag a hat-trick in two World Cups, one in a 4-0 victory against Greece in 1994 and the other in a 5-0 triumph over Jamaica in 1998. The others to have scored two hat-tricks in a single World Cup are Just Fontaine, Sandor Kocsis and Gerd Mueller.
- 1998 – USA and Iran meet in the FIFA World Cup in Lyon, culminating in a 2-1 Iranian victory.
- 2010- Switzerland sets a record for the longest period without conceding a goal at a World Cup, which is eventually ended by Chile’s Mark Gonzalez header after 559 minutes. The Helvetians’ run beats Italy’s previous best by nine minutes.
