- 1958 & 1986 – In 1958, Brazil win their first FIFA World Cup at the sixth attempt by defeating hosts Sweden 5-2. In 1986, Argentina claim their second World Cup title by downing Germany FR 3-2 in Mexico City, with the winning goal scored by Jorge Burruchaga.
- 2002 – During the match for third place between Turkey and Korea Republic in Daegu, Hakan Sukur strikes the quickest goal in FIFA World Cup history after just 11 seconds.
- 2014 – For the sixth time in a row, Mexico are eliminated in the round of 16, this time by the Netherlands following defeats in 2006 and 2010 by Argentina, in 2002 by the USA, in 1998 by Germany and in 1994 by Bulgaria on penalties.
