Here is an excerpt of FIFA’s “Stats of the Day”:
- 1950 – On returning to the pitch after also having played in the 1938 campaign, Switzerland’s Alfred Bickel and Sweden’s Erik Nilsson become the only players to have participated in FIFA World Cups both before and after the Second World War.
- 1978 – Argentina defeat the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in Buenos Aires to win their first FIFA World Cup.
- 2006 – The showdown between Portugal and the Netherlands sets a record for the most cautions in a single FIFA World Cup game, with the referee brandishing a total of 12 yellow cards and 4 red cards for second bookable offences.
- 2014 – Xherdan Shaqiri scores the 50th hat-trick in FIFA World Cup history. The only other Swiss player to have netted a treble in the event is Sepp Huegi against Austria in 1954.
