Here is an excerpt of FIFA’s “Stats of the Day”:
- 1950 – The second and final round of the FIFA World Cup begins in Brazil. The second part of the competition adopts a four-team round-robin format and does not include a final; the 1950 edition is still the only FIFA World Cup tournament without a final. On this day, hosts Brazil defeat Sweden 7-1 while the eventual champions Uruguay draw 2-2 with Spain. The competition winners would subsequently be determined by a decisive game between Uruguay and Brazil (2-1).
- 2006 – In Berlin, Italy win their fourth FIFA World Cup by defeating France 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 extra-time draw in the final. Both goals are scored in the first half of regular time, a penalty by Zinedine Zidane and a header by Marco Materazzi.
