The opening game of the 2018 FIFA world cup saw the hosts Russia trash their opponents Saudi Arabia 5-0 with Denis Cheryshev scoring a brace.

The hosts opened their account after Yury Gazinsky’s header found the back of the net in the 12th minute. Denis Cheryshev replaced Alan Dzagoev as he pulled his hamstring in the 25th minute. Cheryshev wasted no time and immediately added to the opening goal in the 43rd minute as hosts went into the break with a 2 goal cushion.

Coming back from half time the hosts showed no signs of slowing down as they added 3 more goals. 2nd half goals from Dzyuba, Cheryshev and Golovin ensured a 5-0 win for Russia thereby bagging the important 3 points.

Even though Saudi Arabia had 62% of the possession they couldn’t penetrate the Russian defense and ended up registering 0 shots on target.

This win puts Russia on top of group A with Egypt and Uruguay due to meet tomorrow.

Here is the video of the 5 goals scored by Russia against Saudi Arabia.
