FIFA World Cup 2018 : History beckons as Sweden and Switzerland battle it out for a place in the quarterfinals.

137

This is probably the best opportunity yet for Sweden and Switzerland to book a place in the quarterfinals as neither of the teams have gone past this round in the last 24 years. While Sweden last played in the quarters in USA 1994 where they finished third, the Switzerland’s last quarterfinals appearance came in 1954 where they were the hosts.

Coming off an impressive 3-0 win over Mexico, Sweden will have high hopes of getting the better of fellow European nation Switzerland today. Meanwhile, the Swiss are undefeated in Russia and will be so, should they beat Sweden to grab a spot in the quarterfinals. As per team news, Sweden will miss the services of Sebastian Larsson through suspension and Switzerland’s Fabian Schaer and captain Stephan Lichtsteiner are also missing out on today’s match. Switzerland will once against depend on the duo of Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka to break a rigid Swedish defense that has conceded only 2 goals till now.

As much as these two teams have faced each other in international matches and friendlies, this meeting is the first time in any major tournament (World cup and Euros).

Watch the match live on Sony Ten 2 & 3 and Sony Ten 2 HD and Sony Ten 3 HD at 7.30 p.m IST.
