Fantasy sports- while it’s alluring to the sport-loving fans of the country also does have a risk of hacking like all other online services, and a farmer who had turned his fate around was recently a victim of a scam attack when he had lost ₹14L of his fantasy cricket prize money.
Rupesh Dhage, who is a soyabean farmer hailing from Wardha, Maharashtra, recently had the favour of lady luck when he won ₹21 lakhs on a fantasy cricket app at the start of the year. After several surcharges on the prize money, Dhage had received ₹15 lakh on his account and the farmer had taken out ₹1 lakh.
Unfortunately, Dhage became an easy target of a hacker, who impersonated himself as an official of the fantasy cricket app and reached out to the farmer with the false task of updating in “Know Your Customer” (KYC) details on 12th January. The perpetrator, under the false guise of getting Dhage’s KYC details, was able to get hold of the user ID and password of his fantasy cricket account and took out all of the ₹14 lakh that was left on his account.
Following the scam, Dhage wasted no time to report the incident to the Wardha Police cyber cell. The prompt reporting helped the farmer regain the entirely of the ₹14 lakh that he had lost to the scammer, which was again restored back on his account.
“The cyber cell approached the nodal officer of the gaming app to request him to stop the cash from moving out of the payment wallet. The gaming company responded to Wardha police correspondence and ensured the amount was restored to Dhage’s account. The complainant got Rs14 lakh back within four days, by January 16,” said a Wardha cyber cop.
Dhage, who comes from the village of Chirsur in Ashti taluka of Wardha, tills 4 acres of land that he had taken on lease, on which he had sowed soyabean. The farmer had taken up fantasy gaming as a hobby.
