Indian tennis fans are eagerly anticipating an intriguing clash at Roland Garros as Sumit Nagal, India’s top-ranked singles player, faces off against world number 18 Karen Khachanov of Russia in the opening round of the French Open.

Sumit Nagal has had a remarkable journey to qualify for the French Open main draw. His consistent performances on the tour earned him a direct entry, making him the first Indian male player to achieve this feat since Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019.

In an interview with Sports India Show  Former India no 1 Somdev Devvarman opened up on Sumit Nagal’s chances of winning at the upcoming French Open

“you know at this point Sumit’s been around the door for long enough. I think in terms of expectations dealing with him a lot of the uh you know whatever is happening off the court, I think  at this point he’s you know 26 years old been around for long enough, been now in the top hundred had a few wins had a few run-ins with Masters you know played against top 10 guys, so you know”

“I think that I think that he should be feeling  about as good as he has you know he’s in the prime of his career physically playing his game was as good as it’s ever been um so obviously let’s be honest it’s a huge challenge Khachanov one of the toughest matches out there.”

Somdev Devvarman then opened up on Sumit Nagal’s recent form and talked about his competitiveness.

“Over the last four or five years [Sumit Nagal] he’s always been one of those very consistent performers, loves taking the ball early loves dictating play from the baseline both sides have no big weaknesses, huge serve great competitor and so it’s a really tough match let’s be honest but I’d like to see a fight. I think Sumit has it in him you know there’s a lot of tough for draws out there and I think you know Sumit plays well really when he gives himself a chance”
