Pro wrestling legend Billy Gunn is certainly one of the most entertaining superstars to ever step foot inside the squared circle. He is currently enjoying his time in AEW and I had the opportunity to have an interaction with him, thanks to Eurosport India, which is the home of AEW shows for the fans in India. He discussed his association with The Acclaimed, CM Punk’s impending return, AEW Collision and more.

How has the experience of working in AEW been and how has it been different from working in other promotions? Could you also tell us how has your relationship been like with Tony Khan behind the scenes?
“Yeah, so it’s really good. I mean, it’s a, it’s a younger, a little bit younger group than on the other side. I know I’m just talking about when I was there, right? We were just, we were a little bit longer in the teeth when I was there. But it’s just a little bit younger. Some of them haven’t ever been on a big TV promotion. So it’s fun to help them navigate through this TV and how to work TV stuff. But it’s, it’s, it’s still the wrestling business. So it’s still, there’s not a lot of difference, I think, other than the younger, a little bit. And I mean, this with all respect, a little bit on experience TV with the kids on this side. But, you know, the good thing about AEW is everybody gets a shot. I mean, everybody gets a chance. You don’t, you know, Tony’s super cool about letting people come in and work on our, you know, our other shows, which is great. You can’t really do that up there. I mean, you can have tryouts and stuff or whatever. But other than that, it’s still, it’s, it’s all the same. It’s all the wrestling business.”
How did the association with them happen and how did the idea of the popular Scissor Me Daddy Ass come upon?
“God, I wish I knew. I can, I try to ask myself that question every day. I think when they, when they wanted me and my Colton and Austin to separate, it was just, and we had done some stuff with The Acclaimed and I, and we kind of gelled pretty good together. You know, we had good chemistry and stuff together. So I think when we separated, it was just, I was just, I guess my role and my role now of anything is just to help that, you know, whatever I can do to help. That’s all I do. I’m not, I’m not looking to be on top anymore. I’m not looking to be world champ. I’m not looking to do anything. All I want to do is help.”
“And I think at the time when we separated, The Acclaimed are amazing talent. They really are. And I think it was just put me with them just to kind of help them navigate just a little bit of where they were and who they wanted to become and stuff like that. And then as everybody knows me, I’m just a goof anyway. So Dave was doing this scissor thing and then we’re figuring out, Hey, how do we incorporate me into this? And then Anthony just said at the end of this will just say, scissor me Daddy Ass and the next thing you know, it’s the hottest thing in wrestling. Yes. But that’s wrestling. That’s how things go. If you’re, I tell this to everybody, if you’re afraid to put yourself out there, then you never know what’s going to work. And I am never that guy. I’ll put myself out there in the heartbeat. So we just started doing this and the next thing you know it was just hotter and hotter and then it is what it is now.”
How is the prep like backstage when you are working with Colten and Austin? Is there any pep talk from you or do you give them feedback after any promo or matches?
Yeah, I do it all the time. I mean, they’re still at the end of the day, they’re still my kids. So, and they, and I have an awesome relationship with them. So it’s, it’s they’re constantly you’re throwing things at me. I try to not separate myself from them, but they have to find themselves. I can, you know, I help them get to where they’re at a little bit by coaching them, not, you know, putting the work in because they do it all themselves. It’s, it’s still, it’s still very much hey dad, this, that, the other, you know, it’s still, it’s still they run ideas by me and, and when I was working with them it’s amazing like I’ve had some really good stuff in my career but working with them and the acclaim has been like, that’s that’s right on top.
AEW Collision is coming up in few weeks. What are your thoughts on it?
“Yeah, I think it’s awesome right whenever you can, whenever you already have two shows and you can add another one that means something’s working. So we get to do another show on Saturday, which will be fun. It will give us a chance to highlight some more talent that that people haven’t, you know, maybe they’ve gotten to see but haven’t got to see a lot of so whenever you add another show, it just helps you siphon in some more people get maybe some more storylines going and it’s always a good thing.”
CM Punk will be returning at the show. What are your thoughts on that?
“I think it’s good. I think he’s still a huge, he’s still a huge personality in this business.
I feel he can only help, you know, and I only look at it from a TV and talent perspective. I don’t all the back stuff. I don’t pay any attention. You know, it’s what it is. And we all, we all have our things and we all have days where we just kind of go off and do whatever.
And he’s going to help us as a TV show and as helping talent and as a product and whole, I think he’s only going to help. And I think it’s great that he’s coming back. He’ll be on that collision show. So, you know, a lot of stuff will be based over there on that. So, and he’s going to help a lot of people, you know, all the drama goes away, right? But it’s just as a business standpoint, I think it’s amazing.”
So, is there any message you would like to give to the Indian fans?
“Yeah, I hope someday we get to come over there. I think it would be amazing, you know, and I know that they’ve always been very supportive. I know. I think the other company goes over there a little bit. We haven’t had a chance to go over there because we’re still kind of young right we’re about to do this big UK show.Hopefully that sets the ball rolling to go other places. I would love to. I would love to go there. I think it’s one of the only places I haven’t been on planet Earth. So, so I would love to go there. I know the fans over there would be amazing. And then maybe one day I can get all of India to scissor each other.”
