Some legendary cricketers have elevated the jersey numbers to new heights of success in the past and MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain is one of them. He donned the No.7 jersey during his entire career.
Now, the veteran Saba Karim reckons that to preserve the legacy of the legendary stars their shirt numbers should be retired and Dhoni’s No.7 jersey must be retired as a homage to the former Indian skipper.
Will BCCI retire the No.7 jersey of MS Dhoni?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have retired the No.10 jersey of Indian batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar. Pacer Shardul Thakur had donned the jersey but fans lashed out as they demanded the jersey to be retired.
There are no official talks held by BCCI as of yet regarding this matter. While speaking on the Khelneeti podcast, Karim stated that the gesture will be a recognition of the contribution of the legends to Indian cricket but will also be a tribute to legendary cricketers. Here is what he said:
“I think not only MS Dhoni’s jersey, the BCCI must also preserve the jerseys of many other Indian legends. They must also ensure that the jersey number of that legend is not worn by anyone else.”
He added: “In this manner, one can recognize the achievements and the contributions of the greats of Indian cricket. Most importantly, by doing so you give some much-deserved respect to such legends.”
Saba Karim is hopeful of Dhoni grooming the young talents
Dhoni had decided to call it a day on his international career last year in August, which was nearly six years after he quit playing Test cricket. However, ‘Captain Cool’ plays IPL where he leads Chennai Super Kings.
Karim is hopeful Dhoni will stay involved with Indian cricket following his playing career and will contribute to the development of young players.
Saba Karim said: “I wish he keeps mentoring and guiding young players at the state level as well. If that happens, it will be great for the future of Indian cricket.”
