ENG vs IND: Bharat Arun reveals whether R Ashwin will play the fourth test

34

England scripted a strong comeback in the series after defeating India by an innings in the third test match. India’s batting has raised a lot of question marks with experts having their doubts whether the Indians are capable enough to play in swinging conditions. But the Indian team has been highly criticized for not picking their ace spinner R Ashwin.

Ashwin is yet to play a match in the ongoing series. Indian management have gone with the four fast bowlers formula in the series. Hence, they have picked Ravi Jadeja as the front-line spinner as he is a more dependable batsman than R Ashwin. In fact, Jadeja averages more than India’s middle-order trio of Pujara, Kohli and Rahane since 2018. As a result, team management hasn’t picked Ashwin in the playing eleven.

India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun recently opened up on this debate. He revealed that if the things fall into place, then Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin can be seen bowling together.

“Ashwin, no doubt, is one of the best bowlers we have and it’s unfortunate that he has not played so far but if there is an opportunity and if we feel that he is going to fit into the scheme of things, they will definitely both be bowling in tandem,” Arun said in an interview with Hindustan Times.

Bharat Arun says English batsmen are wary of the abilities of R Ashwin

However, history suggests that Oval suits spinners and it usually assists them. Bharat also feels that Oval could be a great opportunity to unleash Ashwin on the Englishmen. However, the conditions and the pitch will be kept in mind while making a decision.

“History at the Oval says that it aids spin but you also know how the Englishmen are wary of Ashwin’s abilities of what he could do if there is any assistance from the track. The best thing would be to decide after looking at the track tomorrow morning as anything could happen between now and tomorrow. So we will look at it tomorrow morning and decide,” Arun added.

Ashwin, playing for Surrey earlier this summer even took a six-wicket haul at this ground. Hence, Ashwin could be a great addition to this Indian bowling line-up. Also, he has the ability to bat. He even scored a hundred against England in India early this year. So he could add depth to the Indian batting given that the middle order is not consistently performing and England has kept Pant quiet in this series.
