Sumit Nagal has defeated Bradley Klahn of the United States 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the men’s singles first round at the US Open to storm into the second round.

Sumit Nagal, in the process, became the first Indian in 7 years to win a singles match at US Open, since  Somdev Devvarman’s magical 2013 season in which the latter had reached the second round of all slams, save Wimbledon.

The talented Indian youngster would be up against second seed Dominic Thiem in the next round.

Sumit Nagal-The rise of a prodigy?

This is not the first time that Nagal has proved his worth at the grandest of stages having also taken a set off Roger Federer himself, in the opening round last year. And while, this time around he met a far easier match, the glimpses of brilliance that Sumit Nagal displayed in that encounter remained.

Sumit Nagal dominated almost the entirety of the match wrapping the first set in just 23 minutes and posting another solid performance in the second set before Klahn staged a late comeback in the third.

However, Sumit, owing to his better skill set finally got the better of his lower-ranked opponent, winning the final set 6-1 and wrapping the match 6-1,6-3,3-6,6-1 in just a shade over 2 hours.

Sumit’s service game, in particular, was exquisite as the Indian youngster registered an 80% first serve wins.

Heading into the US Open, Nagal had put on a great show having reached into the quarterfinals of the Prague Challenger, before being defeated by Stanislas Wawrinka.

However true to his nature, he gave Wawrinka quite a scare by taking the second set and forcing a tie break.
