The Indian contingent at the Elorda Cup in Astana currently has Sumit securing his berth at the 86kg semifinal round, along with four more boxers from the country making it into the quarterfinals.
To secure the bronze for India, Sumit dominated local talent Bekzat Tangatar in their 86 kg quarterfinal outing, finishing off the Kazakh boxer by a 5-0 showcasing power and precision and reaching the last four on Wednesday.
In the 51 kg pre quarterfinal, Zoram Muana overcame the challenge from another Kazakh opponent Daryan Kulzhabayev, winning his entry into the quarterfinals with a 4-1 split decision verdict. His next challenge will be Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Saken Bibossinov on Thursday.
Aside from Zoram, the three other Indians in the last eights are- Pukharam Kishan Singh in the 54kg category facing Daulet Moldashev of Kazakhstan, Ashish Kumar will take on Sukthet Sarawut of Thailand in the 57 kg division and 71 kg boxer Hemant Yadav to lock horns with Kazakhstan’s Talgat Shaikenov. In the women’s category, Shiksha will have her 54 kg quarterfinal bout against Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan
