In a significant move ahead of the IPL 2025 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo as their new mentor. Bravo, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, replaces Gautam Gambhir, who has taken up the role of head coach for the Indian national team.

A New Chapter for Dwayne Bravo

Dwayne Bravo, known for his charismatic presence and exceptional skills on the field, brings a wealth of experience to KKR. With a career spanning 18 years, Bravo has been a pivotal figure in T20 cricket, amassing 631 wickets in 582 matches, making him the highest wicket-taker in T20 history. His transition from player to mentor marks a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Bravo’s association with KKR is not entirely new. He has played for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), a franchise owned by the same group that owns KKR. His familiarity with the Knight Riders’ setup and his extensive experience in T20 leagues worldwide make him an ideal candidate for the mentor role.

Replacing a Legend

Gautam Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, has been an integral part of the franchise’s success. His departure to take on the head coach role for the Indian national team left a significant void. However, KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed confidence in Bravo’s ability to fill this gap. “DJ Bravo joining us is a very exciting development. His deep desire to win wherever he plays, his extensive experience, and knowledge will benefit the franchise and all players immensely,” Mysore stated.

Bravo’s Vision for KKR

Upon his appointment, Bravo shared his enthusiasm for the new role. “I’ve been part of the Trinbago Knight Riders for the last 10 years in the CPL. Having played for and against the Knight Riders in various leagues, I have a lot of respect for how they operate. The owners’ passion, the professionalism of the management, and the family-like environment make it a special place. This is the perfect platform for me as I transition from playing to mentoring and coaching the next generation of players,” Bravo said.

A Fond Farewell to CSK

Bravo’s appointment as KKR’s mentor also marks the end of his long association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Bravo was a key player for CSK, contributing significantly to their success over the years. He also served as the bowling coach for CSK in the IPL 2024 season. In a heartfelt message, Bravo thanked CSK for their support and blessings as he embarks on this new journey.

KKR’s CEO Venky Mysore highlighted the broader role Bravo will play within the Knight Riders’ global franchise network. “We are also very pleased that he will be involved with all our other franchises around the world – CPL, MLC & ILT20,” Mysore added.
