The legend Don Bradman has been in the news as his first baggy green Test cap has been purchased by an Australian businessman for a whopping 450,000 Australian dollars ($340,000) at auction, which is also the second-highest price paid for a thing related to cricket. Notably, the founder of Rode Microphones, Peter Freedman, who had given a massive 9 million Australian dollars ($6.8 million) at an auction for a guitar which was used by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain earlier this year, also has planned to tour Bradman’s Test debut cap around Australia as well.
The price for the prestigious cap placed second after veteran Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne’s Test cap became the highest-paid purchased cricket memorabilia earlier this year. It was certainly a world-record as well, said auction officials. The legend Don Bradman has played for Australia for 20 years, where he had represented the country in 52 Test matches from 1928 to 1948 and is considered as the greatest cricketer to ever live.
He announced his retirement in 1949 with having a batting average of 99.94, which itself is a record too.
“Sir Don Bradman is an Aussie legend,” Freedman said on Tuesday. Not only as one of our greatest talents on the sporting field and one of the most revered athletes of all time, but as an icon of Australian fortitude and resilience. I have some exciting plans for the baggy green that will see it travel the country and shared with sports fans and cricketing communities.”
Bradman earned the cap before his Test debut against mighty England in November 1928 in Brisbane. However, he gave the cap to Peter Dunham – a family friend in 1959 as a gift. However, Dunham was jailed for fraud earlier this year and because of his fraud of $1 million, which he was taken from investors – he has been jailed for more than eight years. While some of his victims asked for Bradman’s cap to settle the debts, his estate was bankrupted too as the cap was auctioned under instructions from the trustee as well.
