Indian discus thrower and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Navjeet Kaur Dhillon has been suspended after failing a dope test, as confirmed by Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Friday.

Navjeet, who clinched bronze at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast and finished eighth at this year’s edition earlier this month, returned positive results for a metabolite of the anabolic steroid Dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (DHCMT) following an out-of-competition test taken during a training stint in Antalya, Turkey, in May.

The 27-year-old had earlier informed AIU that she had taken a supplement that contained the prohibited substance but now insists that she neither failed any dope test, nor received any suspension letter from AIU or the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

“I have not received any such letter. This is a big shock to me. This is the first time I am hearing about this,” Navjeet told The Tribune.

On the contrary, there have been multiple reports, including a statement from Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla, which claim that the athlete did fail her test.

“We have zero tolerance for doping. The AFI is working closely with NADA and AIU to try and eradicate the use of prohibited substances by athletes. I have made it clear that no one can escape, however big the athlete may be,” said Sumariwalla. “It is upon the athletes to prove their innocence to NADA and AIU, which are independent and autonomous bodies.”
