Indian gymnast and Tokyo 2020 medal prospect Dipa Karmakar has aggravated her knee injury during the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Baku on Saturday. This has also forced the 25-year-old to withdraw from the next week’s Doha World Cup.
Dipa Karmakar scored 14.299 in the qualifying rounds to finish third and make her way to the vault finals. However, in her first attempt at the vault finals, she landed awkwardly and pulled out. Moreover, she didn’t make any further attempts.
Dipa Karmakar will return to India for rehabilitation to be match fit for the Asian and World Championships to be held later in the year.
“She had some problems in her knee before today’s final. She was feeling some pain yesterday but felt better after working with physio. She attempted the vault finals today but fell on her first vault, aggravating the injury due to undesired landing,” said Gymnastic Federation of India (GFI) vice president Riyaz Bhati.
Dipa Karmakar’s history of knee injury started way back in Rio Olympics 2016 where she finished fourth. The Manipuri didn’t participate in any official competition for the next two years.
