Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh lost to defending champion Ding Liren in the opening game of the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Monday, November 25. It was a special moment for the reigning world championship as he ended a 304-day wait for a classical game of chess, beginning his title defence in style against the young Indian.
Gukesh vs Ding Liren
In the lead-up to the much-awaited World Championship match, Ding Liren’s form was the major talking point. The Chinese Grand Master was written off as he struggled on the tour throughout the year. In fact, Ding himself doubted his credentials, especially after the Indian won the Candidates with a commanding performance.
Gukesh, the youngest ever challenger for the world championship crown at just 18 years old, began with an aggressive move by pushing his king pawn forward, signalling his attacking intentions. Ding responded with the French defence.
By the 12th move, Gukesh had a half-hour advantage on the clock. However, Ding managed to turn the tables, gaining a couple of extra minutes by the 20th move.
Gukesh faced complications in the middle game, which Ding capitalized on, showcasing his peak form. The game lasted 42 moves. Ding Liren won the game with the black pieces, putting him 1-0 up in the championship.
This victory is crucial for Ding as it sets a positive tone for the rest of the championship. Gukesh, despite his early promise, will need to regroup and strategize for the upcoming games.
