Dinesh Karthik, the former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, has voiced his strong opinion on the selection of Varun Chakravarthy for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Karthik believes that not picking Chakravarthy would be a “grave error” given the spinner’s recent performances.

Varun Chakravarthy’s Recent Form

Chakravarthy has been in phenomenal form since his return to international cricket in October 2024. He recently picked up a career-best performance in the second T20I against South Africa, where he took 5 wickets for 17 runs in just four overs. This performance made him the fifth Indian bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul in T20Is and the third to do so in South Africa.

Karthik’s Endorsement

Karthik praised Chakravarthy’s development and consistency, noting that since his comeback, the spinner has picked up 13 wickets from five matches at an impressive average of 8.84 and an economy rate of 5.75. Karthik emphasized that Chakravarthy’s ability to deceive batsmen with his variations, especially his googly, makes him a valuable asset for the team.

The 33-year-old hasn’t played a single ODI yet and it remains to be seen whether he will get picked in the team for the ODI series against England in January which will serve as India’s preparation for the Champions Trophy 2025.

The Champions Trophy, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, 2025, is a high-stakes tournament where every player’s performance is crucial. Karthik believes that Chakravarthy’s recent heroics and his ability to bowl under pressure make him an ideal candidate for the squad.
