The 2011 ICC World Cup final is very much remembered by Indian fans who, even after nine years of the event, remember the frenzy and jubilation after India won the World Cup after 28 years. MS Dhoni, the finisher as he is, hit an iconic sixer to end the match in India’s favour, and that particular six has been shared and reshared to infinity in social media platforms, and featured as a climax of a successful movie. Gautam Gambhir, also a member of the Indian team at the World Cup, and one of the top performers in the aforementioned final match, believes that the frenzy over the sixer should end by now, as the match was not won by a single six, but by the collective effort of a team.

ESPN Cricinfo recently tweeted a reminder of the famous six.

They also went on to call the sixer the most memorable shot in Cricket history.

It was then that Gautam Gambhir tweeted a reminder of his own. “Just a reminder @ESPNcricinfo: #worldcup2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX,” he tweeted, adding an image of the aforementioned ESPN Cricinfo tweet.

Gambhir was indeed one of the top performers in the final. Both team had won one World Cup each before and interestingly, both were surprise victories (Kapil Dev’s India in 1983, Arjuna Ranatunga’s Sri Lanka in 1996). Sangakkara won the toss and Sri Lanka chose to bat. Sangakkara himself scored 48 and Jayawardene scored a century as Sri Lanka reached 274 for 6 wickets.

India had a shaky start, with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar falling early to Lasith Malinga. Kohli and Gambhir tried to restore stability and after Kohli was dismissed, Dhoni and Gambhir took India to a comfortable position. Unfortunately, Gambhir’s attempt to finish his century with a boundary was unsuccessful and he was dismissed. Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni then finished the match, Dhoni hitting the winning sixer with eleven balls to go.
