Wrestler Deepak Punia defeated Nigeria’s Ekerekeme Agiomor to advance into the Men’s 86kg wrestling division quarterfinals. The Indian led the score 12-1 in the contest and was declared the winner on technical superiority. He then proceeded to defeat China’s Lin Zushen 6-3.

Deepak Punia took was ahead by 2-0 at the half-time mark, before his opponent cut the lead by half after the restart. However, Deepak Punia cranked the heat up as the bout progressed and eventually claimed 12 points at the end.

He faced a challenging set of months last year after the loss of his mother and being unable to train for three months due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. However, he returned strong and won the silver medal at the 2021 Asian Championships, and he is one win away from a shot at the Olympic medal. Punia will now face China’s Lin Zushen in the quarter-finals.

In the quarter-final bout, Deepak Punia emerged victorious 6-3 following a wild final seconds of the game. He now enters the semi-final and is one win away from a medal.
