While everyone is gearing up for the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in the UAE from September 19, one of the most successful franchises – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has got a few big blows heading to the mega event. While their 13 members including Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been tested positive for COVID-19 earlier, two of their key players – Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh have pulled out their names due to personal reasons.

Earlier in the last week of August, Chennai Super Kings players Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Chahar have been tested positive for COVID-19. While Chahar has tested negative, Gaikwad once again tested positive and he will stay in quarantine as well.

However, he has been in the quarantine for over two weeks now and he wouldn’t be allowed to join his teammates in the bio-bubble until he tests negative for the deadly virus. Meanwhile, according to the report in Times of India, CSK sources have confirmed that he has been asymptomatic from the beginning.

On the other hand, in absence of Suresh Raina, Murli Vijay might even open the innings alongside Shane Watson. However, Ambati Rayudu is going to take Raina’s place as well. But they have to plan accordingly with the presence of MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo in the middle-order.

Meanwhile, Deepak Chahar has recovered fully and joined the training as well. His inclusion will add extra strength in CSK’s bowling line-up over the past couple of years. And, he is likely to play the key role for the team in the upcoming season as well. Even Chahar is likely to be in the playing XI when they will take on the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the first game on September 19.

“We are very happy with how he has progressed. He is bowling well at the nets and looks to be in good shape. We are confident that he will be fit and ready for our first game,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said TOI from Dubai on Tuesday. “I can’t say much about team composition but Chahar is very eager to play the first game. We will take a call before the match.”

“The BCCI has strict protocols in place for COVID-positive players and we are adhering to it. Even though Gaikwad is asymptomatic, he has to clear a couple of tests before being certified fit by the BCCI. So we don’t want to rush things and hope he recovers completely before joining the squad,” Viswanathan concluded.
