India has marked a historical feat at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham as the Indian women’s fours team bagged the country’s first ever gold medal in lawn bowls.
In the summit clash of women’s fours, the Indian team comprising Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Pinki, thrashed South Africa with a 17-10 victory on Tuesday.
The adrenaline rushing match started with India taking a comfortable 8-2 lead, but South Africa made a superb pursuit and pushed them behind at 10-8. Despite being under pressure, the women produced an impeccable performance to recover and scored two points in the final round to seal the win.
The historical feat by the women’s team was applauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took to Twitter to congratulate the quartet for their legendary feat.
“Historic win in Birmingham! India is proud of Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey for bringing home the prestigious Gold in Lawn Bowls. The team has demonstrated great dexterity and their success will motivate many Indians towards Lawn Bowls,” PM Modi tweeted.
