Bangladesh became the first Asian side to register points in this edition of the World Cup after executing a huge upset over South Africa. The Tigers managed to defend their highest ever ODI total in the process.

Heading into this fixture after a tough loss in the opening game against the hosts, South Africa named two changes with David Miller and Chris Morris in for Hashim Amla and Dwayne Pretorius. Opting to bowl first, the bowling attack did not execute their plans well as the batsmen found themselves relatively comfortable on a rather flat surface.

An opening blitz by Soumya Sarkar and a record partnership for the third wicket between Shakib-Al- Hasan (75) and Mushfiqur Rahim (78) laid out the platform for Mahmudallah for his pyrotechnics in the end, which steered the team to an impressive total of 330-6.

The chasing side lost Quinton de Kock after a puzzling mix-up and the responsibility of steering the innings was laid upon the duo of Aiden Markram and skipper Faf Du Plessis.

After a stable stand, the duo were dismissed by spin. Shakib-al-Hasan removed the opposition skipper to register his 250th ODI wicket. Series of cameos by the middle order batsmen got the Proteas close, but they ultimately fell short by a margin of 21 runs.

The Proteas are under immense pressure with consecutive losses and a tough fixture against the favorites India.

Brief Scorecard:

Bangladesh 330-6 (M.Rahim 78; A.Phehlukwayo 2-52)

South Africa 309-8 (F. du Plessis 62; M.Rahman 3-67)
