The BCCI have decided to call-up Rishabh Pant to England as cover for Shikhar Dhawan, who will sit out the next few games as a result of a fractured thumb.
Rishabh Pant was unable to make it into the final 15 men contingent for the World Cup. The decision sparked quite a debate with Dinesh Karthik preferred over the swashbuckling left-hander.
It seems like England is destined for Pant after his call-up. The BCCI media manager claimed that the wicket-keeper batsman will join the squad right before India’s clash against Pakistan at Old Trafford, Manchester. BCCI Manager Moulin Parakh elaborated:
“Pant will be joining the team at the earliest as back-up as requested by the team management. Like Khaleel (Ahmed) he will be traveling with the team but he won’t be part of the squad just yet, Pant will be here in Manchester as a stand-by,
Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar provided an update on Dhawan stating that the opener will be under observation hoping that he can make a contribution to the team during the crucial business end of the tournament. He said:
“Dhawan will be under observation, will take some time. Around 10th or 12th day (between June 19 to 21) we will know where he stands. We don’t want to rule out a precious player like Shikhar immediately, we’ll wait for 10-12 days,”
He also discussed India’s ploy in the upcoming matches now that Dhawan will not be available for selection. He stated:
“KL (Rahul) moves to the top of the order, there are various options for the middle order. Vijay Shankar and a couple of others are options. Till 10 or 12 days, if and when replacement is required, it’s good to have a replacement player coming in (Rishabh Pant in this case) and practice with the team,”
