With the threat of rain always looming around, Eoin Morgan elected to bowl after winning the toss on the surface which was under covers. The English bowlers failed to make most of the slope at the iconic ground as Aaron Finch and David Warner brought up their third hundred run stand.

Warner soon departed after reaching his fifty while Finch went on to bring up his second hundred of the tournament. The Aussies looked well set for a total in excess of 300 at one stage but the fragile middle order crumbled and they could only settle for 285-7.

With a prospect of lateral movement across the surface, the English batsmen failed to adapt like the Australians. The left-arm bowling duo of Jason Behrendorff and Mitchell Starc wrecked the top order and reduced the hosts to 26-3 in 6 overs.

Ben Stokes instilled some life into the run chase with a half-century before being undone by a fiery inswinging yorker from Mitchell Starc. Behrendorff was quick to wipe out the tail to end up with a five-wicket haul and hand the five-time champions a win by 64 runs and a place in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals.
