Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan feels that replacing a player of Suresh Raina’s stature would be a very difficult proposition. The franchise ended their 11-year association with the former India player after not picking him up in the auction.

CSK CEO admits replacing Suresh Raina would be difficult

The 35-year-old found no suitors at the IPL 2022 mega auction at his base price of Rs 2 crore. He will not be a part of the tournament for the second time since the 2020 edition in the UAE.

CSK actively placed a bid for almost all their former players and were successful in bringing back Deepak Chahar, Robin Uthappa, DJ Bravo, Ambati Rayudu, Mitchell Santner among others. However, the CEO claimed that the team did not place a bid for Raina because he did not fit into the team composition. While speaking with The Indian Express and on CSK’s official YouTube channel, he said:

“Raina has been the backbone of our team for the last 12 years. So it will take some time before we get a (proper) replacement.

“Raina has been one of the most consistent performers for CSK for the last 12 years. Of course, it was very difficult for us, not to have Raina but at the same time, you should also understand that the team composition depends on the form and kind of team which any team would like to have”

Raina was the heartbeat of the Chennai side since its inception. The leading run-scorer of the franchise, however, was far from his best in the previous campaign. He was dropped from the side as Moeen Ali. Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa took charge of the middle order.

The defending champions were the first franchise to complete their overseas quota and the maximum player limit at the auction. The team once again went for experience at the two-day event and roped in quality players in the process in a bid to defend their title.
