The selection committee sprung up a surprise with the inclusion of Mayank Markande in the T20 squad to face Australia. The leg spinner revealed his surprise over the call-up and credited Rohit Sharma for his support.
Mayank Markande became a household name for the Mumbai Indians’ fan base with his exploits in the 2018 IPL. Constantly being in the hunt for the purple cup after a sensational debut, the 21-year-old graced his status as the next spin sensation of the country.
Now, after an impressive outing in the domestic circuit, his hard work has paid off with a maiden call-up to the national team. In a chat with Cricketnext, the young leg spinner stated that it is a dream come true for him and spoke about Rohit Sharma’s influence on him.
“It’s a dream come true, I had never thought I will get an opportunity to play for India so soon. It’s a very big thing and I am extremely happy, Credit goes to the team management, Rohit bhaiya had told me that I was bowling well and should be prepared to play. Rahul Sanghvi sir helped me a lot in the nets. Even Rohit bhaiya said to not hesitate and ask him about anything, he encouraged me a lot,” said Markande
The youngster went on to add that he is working on the conventional leg spinner and is excited at the prospect of sharing a dressing room with the likes of heroes such as Virat Kohli.
“Even after the IPL, I have only worked on improving my leg-spinner. For any leg-spinner, it’s the most important delivery. If I can have control over that, then any batsman will find it difficult to hit me for runs. Googly is something which comes naturally to me,”
“I haven’t really thought about it but there is so much to learn (from Kohli). The way he handles game situations, I will try to learn from their experiences but sharing the dressing room with the likes of Virat bhaiya, Dhoni bhaiya and Rohit bhaiya will be a dream come true,” Markande concluded
