A conflict of interest has been filed against MS Dhoni’s decision to mentor the India  Cricket Team during the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. The report has been filed by former MP Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta.

Conflict of Interest filed against MS Dhoni's mentorship role in T20 WC

He filed the complaint to the BCCI Apex Council on the basis of conflict of interest, which was issued by the Lodha Committee. Gupta believes that Dhoni should not undertake the role of the mentor while he is still contracted by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. Dhoni currently leads the three-time champions in the cash-rich league.

“Yes, Gupta has sent a letter to apex council members including Sourav (Ganguly) and Jay (Shah). He has cited clause 38 (4) of the BCCI constitution which loosely states that one person cannot be holding two separate posts. The Apex Council will need to consult its legal team to check the ramifications,” said a BCCI source on conditions of anonymity as quoted by The Indian Express.

It remains to be seen what legal obstacles or hurdles must be clear for MS Dhoni to undertake the role. In the past, such instances have occurred with former players such as Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, who had to leave their posts in their respective IPL franchises to undertake a role in the Indian cricket system.

MS Dhoni was announced as the mentor for the Indian team along with the announcement of the squad for the T20 World Cup. This will be his first role with the Indian national team ever since the 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final and his subsequent retirement in 2020.
