The alarming form of Virat Kohli has posed to be a concern for the BCCI. The selectors are heavily considering dropping the former Indian captain for the upcoming home series against South Africa.
Following a lean home season, Kohli’s poor form has continued in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. The ace batter has only recorded 21 runs across his last five innings for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RB). A change in batting position did not help his case as he was dismissed cheaply in their most recent outing against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Kohli has not been in touch at all with his timing and shot selection all coming into play. Several pundits have suggested the player take a break from the game in order to find his former touch.
A member of the selection committee told InsideSport:
“See, it’s not the first time that a player has gone through a rough patch. It’s only natural. We were anyway looking to give chances to some young bunch and rest the senior players. Virat will be given rest. But if he wants to play, then we will see. We will speak to him before the team selection meeting,”
Kohli was awarded a break for a brief period in the home season, but a small break might not suffice considering how far the 33-year-old seems away from good form.
The source added:
“No, we haven’t discussed anything with Virat yet. It’s too premature. He needs the space and time to process the lean patch. Let the IPL get over, we will speak to him about a break if he wants. But in all likelihood, he will play only in the England series but it will depend on what he wants. We should give him that respect,”
Noting that the poor form is indeed a concern for the board and the selection committee, a senior BCCI official said:
“He is a great servant of Indian cricket. But his form from sometime now is a huge concern now for the national selectors and BCCI”
The former skipper needs to find his form before the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The previous calendar year took a massive toll on him as he proceeded to quit captaincy across all fronts to focus solely on his batting.
