The ICC Player Of The Month winner for the month of February, Shreyas Iyer, added another feather into his cap. The batter was adjudged as the player of the match for his twin fifties in the second Test. He had bagged the player of the series award in the T20I series between the two nations.

Iyer has presented a strong case for himself ever since returning from a shoulder injury. From his historic Test debut to the recent T20 exploits, the newly appointed Kolkata Knight Riders is arguably in the form of his life and is undroppable from the team.

Admitting that he played a little different to his playing style, Iyer said during the post-match press conference:

“That wasn’t my normal approach, but I saw the batters struggling, so I knew I had to be attacking and put the pressure back on the bowlers. I was batting on 55 when the bowlers came in, and then I added around 40 more runs. I could have got out earlier as well, so didn’t worry about the hundred.”

Iyer continued:

“I just wanted to bat as many balls as possible (in the second innings), knew that I had some support down the order with Shami and Bumrah. I have always dreamt about playing Test cricket for India, good feeling to come and contribute, want to keep this going.”

The 26-year-old, who came into bat at 86-4, donned an aggressive approach and scored 92 off 98 deliveries to propel India to a healthy 252 in the first innings. He missed out on his second Test hundred after losing his wicket to Jayawickrama with to a stumping.

The in-form Iyer, who was roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders for a sum of INR 12.25 crore has been given the responsibility of captaincy as well. He will make his debut for the franchise in the opening contest of the IPL 2022 against defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on March 26.
