Sports, especially cricket and sledging go hand in hand. Now one more thing has added in the list – racism. More often we find racism in our daily lives also and it eventually became a part which many doesn’t want to talk about. However, recently the debate around racism has come into the limelight once again when former West Indies T20 World Cup-winning captain Darren Sammy alleged racism during his tenure with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 Indian Premier League.

His tweet read, “So recently I discovered a word that I was being called was not what it actually meant I need some answers. So before I start calling out names I need these individuals to reach out and please tell me there’s another meaning to that word and when I was being called it, it was all in love.”

After the post of  Darren Sammy became viral on social media, his teammate Chris Gayle backed him, saying, “It’s never too late to fight for the right cause or what you’ve experienced over the years! So much more to your story, @darensammy88. Like I said, it’s in the game”.

One of the most destructive batsmen in world cricket – Chris Gayle has also revealed that he too has faced racism earlier. He also added that this creates hurdles in the game as well. However, on Tuesday, Sammy had released a video where he said that he faced racial things within the Sunrisers camp.

“I have played all over the world and I have been loved by many people, I have embraced all dressing rooms where I have played, so I was listening to Hasan Minhaj as to how some of the people in his culture describe black people,” Darren Sammy said in the video.

“This does not apply to all people, so after I found out a meaning of a certain word, I had said I was angry on finding out the meaning and it was degrading, instantly I remembered when I played for SunRisers Hyderabad, I was being called exactly the same word which is degrading to us black people,” he further added.

Darren Sammy also revealed that he had no idea what that words mean at the time when he was being called with the word. Even he also shared that other players used to laugh every time whenever he was called by that name.

Currently, the protests are going on in the United States over the death of an African-American man named George Floyd and he has spoken about that as well. Moreover, he had also asked the ICC and other cricket boards to support the fight against racism and social injustice.
