The left-handed batsman was only a solitary run away from his 7th IPL hundred in the final over with a couple of deliveries left. Having just hit a six off Jofra Archer, Gayle was met with a very full delivery the next ball that found its way to the stumps after a couple of deflections.

The agonizing way of being dismissed coupled with the frustration of being dismissed on 99 channelled Gayle’s anger, who resorted to flinging his bat away towards the direction of short midwicket in the end. The West Indian did shake hands with Jofra Archer right after, but the damage was already done.

Following the conclusion of the match, the IPL released a statement where it was revealed that Gayle had accepted the breach of conduct and accepted the punishment which involved 10 per cent of his match fee.

Gayle considers this innings no less than a hundred

Right after being dismissed for 99, Gayle was asked about his knock who claimed that despite missing out on the three-figure mark on the scoreboard, he still considers this innings to be a ton.

“To the guys who I promised to get a century, I missed out today but in my mind, it’s a century (laughs). We just need a win,” Gayle said at the halfway mark of the innings.
