Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was puzzled by the absence of Washington Sundar in the Test squad for the South Africa tour. India will be without the services of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja for the tour and as a result, have included Jayant Yadav with the first-choice spinner R Ashwin.
With India seemingly set to employ their formula of fielding a sole spinner in overseas conditions, it is highly likely that only Ashwin features in the playing XI. However, Chopra notes that there might be times where 2 spinners are required and Sundar’s absence or availability status should at least be mentioned.
The off-spinner all-rounder was last seen in the tour of England, where he sustained a finger injury in a warm-up contest. The injury forced him to miss the second leg of the IPL and as a result, was far from contention to be in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. Speaking on his youtube channel, Chopra said:
You have rewarded Jayant Yadav for the job he did in the Mumbai Test but only Jayant Yadav with Ashwin, that’s about it. You have not even thought about Washington. If you are searching the balance, assuming you want to play two spinners with three fast bowlers, at times you may want to do that, so Washi fits easily in the spot Jadeja left. He fits there perfectly.
Ravindra Jadeja has reportedly suffered a long-term injury and is expected to return by the time the 2022 edition of the IPL begins. Washington Sundar has been a valuable backup player ever since making his debut in the longer formats. While his bowling has not been optimal, he has shone with the bat on multiple occasions already. Chopra added:
“But not to consider him at all, don’t talk about him at all, no one even told if he is injured or unavailable or why he has not been picked, that is not right.”
Washington Sundar was not retained by his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore and will be available in the upcoming mega auction.
