Chinese Taipei Open: Sourabh Verma advances to the second round

Sourabh Verma progressed to the second round of the Chinese Taipei Open after beating Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai in straight games in men’s singles here on Wednesday.

The reigning world champion beat Sakai 22-20 21-13 in a match that lasted just 38 minutes. The next round will most likely see him face the top seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.

Sourabh currently happens to be the only remaining Indian in the tournament after Riya Mookerjee and the pair of Aparna Balan and Prajakta Sawant crashed out of both women’s singles and women’s doubles respectively.

Riya lost her game by the scoreline of 21-19 11-21 13-21 to Thailand’s Supanida Katethong while the doubles pairing of Aparna and Prajakta found the local pair of Cheng Yu-Pei and Juang Tz-Ren too tough to handle and lost 19-21 23-21 15-21.
