The veteran batting duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane could soon face demotion. Their position in group A of the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) central contracts could be at stake. The contracts are classified into four categories: A+, A, B, and C worth Rs 7 cr, 5 cr, 3 cr, and 1 cr respectively. The board is set to decide its fresh list of contracted players for the upcoming season in the upcoming few days.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane could face demotion
As per the reports as well, both Pujara and Rahane are likely to lose their place in the team when selectors select squad for home series against Sri Lanka. Moreover, The Times of India reported that it seems that Rahane and Pujara are all set to be demoted to Grade B from the Grade A category. According to few reports, Ishant Sharma is also likely to be downgraded to Grade B, while another player is the fellow speedster Umesh Yadav.
The team management had backed both the players in all three matches but they failed to capitalize. Rahane scored 136 runs in three Test matches against South Africa at 22.66 while Pujara managed 124 runs. With youngsters like Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari waiting in the line, the senior duo could also be dropped from the final XI against Sri Lanka.
Speaking about, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, they are not getting a promotion in the central contract list as per the report as well. Given that both the players have been consistent in all forms, they were likely to be promoted to the Grade A+ category. But the report suggests that it won’t happen this year.
Rahul has sealed his spot in the Test team too and led the team in the 2nd Test match on the South Africa tour. He also led the Men in Blue in 3 ODIs. He is likely to be named captain or the vice-captain of the red-ball team.
It turns out that Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah are three players in the Grade A+ category and they have a salary of Rs 7 crore each.
