Former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma has become the chairman of the Senior Selection Committee of BCCI, assuming office alongside Abey Kuruvilla and Debashish Mohanty as the new members.

Chetan Sharma, who played as an all-rounder, moved past the frontrunner Ajit Agarkar in the virtual interview conducted by the Madan Lal-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprised of Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik, who interviewed a total of 11 shortlisted candidates.

Chetan Sharma, Maninder Singh, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Ratra and Nikhil Chopra had applied for the chairman spot from the North zone, while Ajit Agarkar, Abey Kuruvilla and Nayan Mongia applied from the West and Shiv Sunder Das, Debashish Mohanty and Ranadeb Bose applied from the East.

Chetan Sharma outpaces Ajit Agarkar for the Chairman spot

Agarkar was the favourite to become the new committee chairman as the former pacer was the most capped cricketer with 26 Test and 191 ODI caps, but at the end, Chetan Sharma was named as the new chairman, replacing Sunil Joshi.

The former president Joshi will, however, continue to hold his office in the committee alongside Harvinder Singh, both of whom were appointed earlier this year in February.

The news was made official by BCCI on Twitter.

“Based on CAC’s recommendations Mr Chetan Sharma, Mr Abey Kuruvilla and Mr Debashish Mohanty have been appointed to the senior selection committee. Mr Sharma will be head the selection panel,” tweeted BCCI.

Moreover, Sharma will represent the North zone, while Abey Kuruvilla and Debashish Mohanty will be representing West and East zones respectively. However, Sharma was preferred over the other two for the seat of the chairman as he has made more red-ball appearances, 23 to be exact (plus 65 ODIs),

In comparison, Kuruvilla has earned 10 Test and 25 ODI caps and Mohanty, who was promoted from being the chief selector of the junior committee, has donned the Indian shirt twice in Tests and 45 times in ODIs.

“It’s indeed a privilege for me to get an opportunity to serve Indian cricket once again. I am a man of few words and my action will speak louder than words,” Chetan Sharma spoke to PTI, “I can only thank BCCI for this opportunity.”

The committee is set to be reviewed by CAC after a period of one year and will make recommendations to the governing body on the basis of being eligible to continue holding office for at least three years.
