Chess to make a comeback in 2022 Asian Games

After missing out on the previous two editions of the Asian Games at 2014 and 2018, Chess is set to make a comeback in the 2022 Asian Games at Guangzhou. On March 3, a meeting was held at the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Bangkok wherein it was decided that the sport will return again in the competition. President Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah later affirmed the decision to Arkady Dvorkovich, the president of World Chess Federation.

“I also have the pleasure to inform you that sport of Chess has been officially included in the Sports Programme of the Games,” Read A Letter designated from the oca president to his wcf COUNTERPART.

The inclusion of chess will bolster India’s medal prospects massively in the Games. In the 2006 Asian Games, Humpy Koneru’s heroics awarded India a gold medal in the women’s individual rapid event and, the trio of Krishnan Sasikaran, Pentala Harikrishna, and Humpy also bagged a gold medal in the mixed team standard event.

However, in the subsequent 2010 Asian Games, India only managed to win a bronze medal in the men’s team standard and women’s individual rapid events as China dominated the proceedings.
