When former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri arrived in England to take over the managerial duties at Chelsea, the Blues seemed to be off to a great start under the Italian. But soon, various issues surfaced, and soon a dip in their form was observed. The problem lies in the way Sarri trains his players.
Sarri’s tactics at first were hailed by many as something that the club needed. But considering their recent turn in form, even the club’s most loyal of fans are now disappointed with the quality of football on the pitch, and have started to question the coach’s methods.
The 60-year old Italian did not hold back to criticize his players after Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, and summed it all up saying his squad was all but “difficult to motivate”. Now one might think the answer probably lies in the training, since the club suffered 4 losses in their last 9 Premier League outings itself.
Sarri’s bifurcation of the ground among the defenders and, the forwards and midfielders for training explains why the backline has problems linking up with the rest. It is also noteworthy that he makes the team train even on matchdays with late kick-offs, which explains how Alvaro Morata sustained a minor hamstring injury which ruled him out of the first leg of their League Cup tie against Spurs a fortnight ago.
Sarri had been infamous in Naples as well, for not having much of any rotation in the squad, and the fact that he often chooses players from a very small group backs that fact observed in Italy. This is sure to cause some rift between him and his players, with one reported saying whether Sarri “even knows what my name is”.
However, David Luiz seems to refute all the reports, and has affirmed that Sarri has the confidence of the whole dressing room and, the fact that Higuain, the striker he most wanted in London, has been arranged for even though on loan, shows that he has the club’s backing too.
Whether or not these things change is something that still remains to be seen.
