Chelsea’s signing of Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City back in 2017 might not have made much news for exploits on the pitch. But the midfielder certainly is making headlines as Cheshire police have charged him with drink driving following his accident in the wee hours of Monday.

Drinkwater won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2015-16 alongside stars N’Golo Kante and Riyadh Mahrez, and soon went on to join Chelsea for a £35m fee in September of 2017, a year after Kante moved to Stamford Bridge.

Though the former England midfielder has since made a measly 12 appearances for the Blues, the last one of those being the 2-0 Community Shield final loss to Manchester City in August 2018, Drinkwater is said to be staying put at west London.

However, the 29-year old former Leicester midfielder was involved in an accident near Manchester after a late night pub outing, and was arrested shortly early on Monday morning on drink driving charges.

A statement from the Cheshire police read:

“A 29-year-old from Nether Alderley has been charged with drink driving following an incident in Cheshire.

“Danny Drinkwater, of Bollington Lane, was arrested shortly after 12.30 a.m. on Monday 8 April following a one-vehicle collision on Ashley Road in Mere.”

The Englishman has been released on unconditional bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court for a hearing due on May 13.
