The 32 year old, who hails from Welkom, scored an excellent 160 off 287 balls with 18 fours and 4 sixes, and is the first South African cricketer to get past the 100 run mark against India in the last 9 years, as Hashim Amla was his last compatriot to score a century in test cricket against the Men in Blue back in 2010.

Soon after the play was over at ACA-VDCA Stadium, Elgar spoke in an interview about his last experience getting a century in the subcontinent conditions.

“Every hundred for your country is special and emotional but I’d like to think it was probably my best for South Africa, especially in such conditions and against the powerhouse of India, the best team in the world” Elgar said to reporters.

This was the 12th test century for the 315 times test cap holder, who remembered his experience playing here back in 2015.

“It’s good to contribute once again. Playing in India is very tough. The last time I was here, I was very experienced. In those four years, I have grown a lot as a cricketer. I have played county cricket, which has helped” he added.

The Proteas reached 385-8 by the close of play on the third day in Visakhapatnam, and the former skipper praised his partner Quinton de Kock, who also scored a brilliant 111.

“Quinny was absolutely brilliant – he’s a bit of a genius with the bat, to be honest. I’ve known him a long time as a cricketer and a person and he has so much to contribute to the team.” Elgar hailed the 26 year old.
