PANDIT REPLACES BRENDON MCCULLUM AS THE COACH OF KKR

Brendon McCullum, who instantly heightened the popularity of the franchise tournament following a whirlwind century in the first-ever IPL game, was appointed the coach of Kolkata Knight Riders and sister team Trinbago Knight Riders in 2019. While the latter won their 4th Carribbean Premier League (CPL) trophy under his coaching, pundits and fans had mixed reviews on his impact on KKR.

McCullum became the Test coach of the England National Team in May 2022 and has since developed an attacking approach termed “Bazball” by the English Media. KKR needed a new head coach in the absence of McCullum, and they decided to select the celebrated domestic coach Chandrakant Pandit for the job.

“We are very excited that Chandu is joining the Knight Riders family to lead us through the next phase of our journey. His deep commitment to what he does and his track record of success in domestic cricket, is there for everyone to see. We are looking forward to his partnership with our skipper Shreyas Iyer, which promises to be an exciting one,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore stated.

PANDIT PLAYED AS A WICKETKEEPER FOR THE INDIAN NATIONAL TEAM BEFORE FINDING SUCCESS AS A COACH

In his playing days, Pandit managed to find his way to the Indian National Cricket Team. He plays 5 Test matches and 36 One Day Internationals for his nation, at a time when India was looking for a capable wicketkeeper. Interesting, on his Test debut, English wicketkeeper Bruce French was also making his Test debut, leading the match to become a rarity where both men behind the stumps were debutants.

Following his career as an active cricketer, Pandit took up coaching. He began a cricket academy at his alma mater and later found success as a coach for the likes of Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh (who won their first Ranji Trophy in 2022 under his tutelage).
